If you’ve read the previous post about The Top Five Worst First Date Ideas, then you already know what NOT to do on a first date. But you may still be clueless about what you actually SHOULD do. So what other options are there besides the conventional dinner and a movie? Well, actually a lot.
You don’t need to spend a fortune before you even know the girl. Breaking the bank for a bad date is never fun. And if you’re following along with these articles, taking action, and keeping up with great dating advice, you should be going on plenty of first dates! Here are some great (and inexpensive) first date ideas:
1. Grabbing Drinks at a Bar/Pub
This is easily my favorite first date ideas. I actually can’t remember the last first date I went on that didn’t involve grabbing drinks at a bar. It’s such a great way to build rapport and a physical connection, and it’s also very low pressure. You are in a social environment and a fun atmosphere when sitting in a bar. It’s better than the conventional dinner date for many reasons. For one, you do not have to sit across from your date. You can grab a seat at the bar and sit beside her, which makes for easy casual touching and helps you to build a great connection. You can also chat with the bartender and people around you, so again, there is less pressure on the both of you.
I can’t recommend this date idea enough. I’ll give you a quick system to follow for these dates right now. Think of some of your favorite bars to go to, preferably bars where the music isn’t constantly blasting- you want to be able to have a conversation without shouting louder than Ray Lewis at a home game. It’s also great if the bars are in close proximity- if you can find a strip of good bars on the same street, even better! That way you can hop around a few different places on a date and build comfort.
Once you have a solid location, make that your go-to. You can simply ask a girl when she is free, and suggest grabbing drinks at __XXXXX_ street. Simple enough. From there, either pick her up or meet her on the street and hop into one of the bars. Grab a seat next to her at the bar and say “I’ll get the first round, you get the next one, deal?” Don’t make this a big deal because it’s NOT a big deal. She’ll almost always say yes (I’ve been on many first dates, and I’ve never had an issue with this), and from there you can move on and get the first round. I’ll usually get one or two rounds in each place before bouncing over to the next bar.
2. Comedy Club
I may be a little biased here because my dad is a comedian and I’ve always gotten free entry to comedy clubs. But even so, comedy shows make for an amazing date. You will both be laughing and having a good time, and overall just enjoying your experience together. You can make some quick remarks and exchange funny looks throughout a comedian’s set. You can usually get into a comedy show for around $10 per person, so you are not breaking the bank. You can also grab drinks at the comedy club using the same strategy from above. Great first date.
3. Frozen Yogurt/Coffee
These kind of go together- they are both the same idea. I prefer frozen yogurt because I absolutely hate coffee, but either one works. There are no shortages of frozen yogurt/coffee places so you won’t have to worry. A frozen yogurt/coffee date is a great day-time date. You’ll get to know her while enjoying a good snack, and it’s a cheap, low pressure date.
These dates are great when you are both short on time and want a quick meet up during the day. The downside is you probably won’t be taking a girl home after frozen yogurt/coffee. But then again, anything is possible. Frozen yogurt/coffee dates can help you build rapport and as long as you don’t screw it up, it will be that much easier to set up a nighttime date in the near future.
I LOVE adventures, especially for dates. The focus is not solely on the conversation between the two of you, but on the experience you are both sharing. Some of the best first dates I’ve been on have been mini-golfing, go-kart racing, rollerblading, and bike riding. It gets your competitive juices flowing and adrenaline pumping, creating a very fun and memorable experience. Not only that, but it will also show that you are interesting and open-minded. I remember one mini-golf date where I hit a hole-in-one on the 18th hole to tie the game. It was epic and Tiger Woods-esque, and led to a great night.
5. Your House
This really depends on the context of your relationship with the girl. If you grabbed her number after a quick five minute chat, you probably shouldn’t try and invite her to your house for the first date. However, if you built a great connection and talked to her over the span of an hour or more when you met her, then your house may be an option. Keep in mind, you probably shouldn’t invite her over if you still live with your parents, but that was covered in the last post. If you have roommates, you should try to kick them out for the night so you can be alone.
When you invite her over, do something fun. Maybe you can pick out a recipe from a cookbook with her, shop for the food, and cook dinner together. Don’t just sit on your couch and watch a movie the whole night. Make it an interesting and exciting experience.
